As a crucial indicator of the mechanical properties of materials, the hardness of ceramics, along with the accurate determination of ceramic samples’ hardness values and the evaluation of their toughness, serves as a key parameter for measuring the wear resistance and compressive strength of ceramic materials. In accordance with the international standard ISO Vickers Hardness Testing of Ceramic Materials and combined with years of on-site customer experience of Shandong Shancai Company, ceramic materials are characterized by complex structures, high hardness, brittleness and minimal plastic deformation. Therefore, the commonly used hardness expression methods include Vickers hardness, Knoop hardness and Rockwell hardness. The following is a special ceramic sample sent by a customer, and Shandong Shancai has briefly summarized the Vickers hardness testing process of this ceramic sample. The detailed operation steps are as follows:

.Cold Mounting Treatment: Ceramic test pieces are fabricated into samples by means of cold mounting. The cold-mounted samples are intended to provide a stable testing environment for subsequent hardness tests.

.Surface Grinding and Polishing: Use a metallographic grinding and polishing machine to perform precision grinding and polishing on the mounted surface of the test piece to be measured. The metallographic grinding and polishing machine can thoroughly remove impurities, oxide layers and other defects that may affect the test results from the sample surface, ensuring that the test surface is flat and smooth.

.Sample Placement: Place the ground and polished sample on the workbench of the Vickers hardness tester. Set the test parameters (such as test force, etc.).

.Take Measurement: Locate the clearest interface on the surface and click the automatic measurement button on the system; the Vickers hardness tester will then perform the measurement operation automatically. For a Vickers hardness tester equipped with an automatic measurement system, the entire measurement process is controlled by the instrument, which reduces the interference of human factors on the measurement results and improves the measurement accuracy.
.Obtain Results: After the measurement is completed, the hardness value will be automatically displayed on the screen of the Vickers hardness tester. The operator can read the measurement data timely and accurately, and then conduct recording and analysis.
