Type Selection Analysis of Hardness Testing Equipment for Large and Heavy Workpieces

Hardness Testing Equipment

As is well-known, each hardness testing method—whether using Brinell, Rockwell, Vickers, or portable Leeb hardness testers—has its own limitations and none is universally applicable. For large, heavy workpieces with irregular geometric dimensions like those shown in the example diagrams below, portable Leeb hardness testers are currently widely used in many testing methods to control their hardness.

The Leeb hardness tester adopts a dynamic testing method, and there are many factors that affect the accuracy of its hardness testing, such as the elastic modulus of the material, the wear of the indenter ball, the surface roughness of the workpiece, the radius of curvature, and the depth of the surface hardening layer. Compared with the static testing methods of Brinell, Rockwell, and Vickers hardness testers, its testing error is much larger. So, if high accuracy is required for hardness testing, how should we select a hardness tester?

During the testing process of such large and heavy workpieces using ordinary hardness testers, the loading of workpieces before testing, the loading and unloading of the hardness tester during the test, and the unloading of workpieces after testing will all bring enormous workload to the operation process. So, how should we select a hardness tester?

Above two hardness testers with a lifting head structure are recommended to complete the entire testing process, such as our customized floor large gate-type online Rockwell hardness tester HRZ-150GE and the desktop head up&down automatic Rockwell hardness tester SCR3.0.

This hardness testing solution enables Rockwell hardness testing in accordance with international hardness testing standards (such as ISO 6506-1:2014 and ISO 6507-1:2018). Similarly, for Vickers and Brinell hardness testing, the automatic lifting structure of the testing head can also be implemented. Meanwhile, it meets the requirements of high-precision testing for heavy workpieces and efficient production.
