Below are the spherical ceramic samples sent by the customer for hardness testing. To accurately measure the surface hardness of the ceramic ball material and ensure precise and reliable test results, we perform hardness testing on the ceramic ball specimens using a micro Vickers hardness tester.
Since the ceramic ball specimens are spherical and small in size, making them difficult to clamp, metallographic mounting and polishing pretreatment shall be carried out before hardness measurement in accordance with standard procedures.
Specimen Mounting Process:
Ceramic ball specimens are tiny in size and cannot be clamped or fixed, making positioning difficult during testing. We use the ZXQ‑2S metallographic mounting press below to prepare the ceramic samples into test specimens:
Place the specimen into the mold of the metallographic mounting press, and perform mounting and fixing by means of hot mounting. This process forms the ceramic ball into a standard specimen block with a regular shape and a flat test surface, ensuring a stable flat surface for subsequent polishing and hardness testing.
Specimen Grinding and Polishing:
After mounting is completed, the surface of the mounted block is first subjected to coarse grinding, fine grinding and polishing using a metallographic grinding and polishing machine. The test surface is then finely polished with a velvet cloth until the surface is smooth, free of scratches and deformation layers, meeting the mirror finish requirements for micro Vickers hardness testing.
Specimen Clamping and Focusing:
Place the polished specimen steadily on the stage of the HVT-1000A micro Vickers hardness tester, perform the Vickers test in accordance with the operating procedures of the Vickers hardness tester, and obtain the hardness value (refer to the following steps for detailed operation).
Test Parameter Setting:
According to the ceramic ball material and standard requirements, select the corresponding test scale and test force of the HVT-1000A micro Vickers hardness tester. Set parameters such as dwell time, number of test points, and measurement mode in the equipment software. After confirming the parameters are correct, enter the test state.
Indentation Loading and Measurement:
After the test is started, the HVT-1000A micro Vickers hardness tester will automatically perform automatic loading-dwell-unloading . During indentation measurement, the system automatically identifies the indentation boundary. By triggering auto-measurement either automatically or manually, the measurement system directly obtains the hardness value. Meanwhile, data such as diagonal length are displayed in real time and can be recorded and saved.
