SMC (Sheet Molding Compound) is widely used in modern industrial manufacturing due to its excellent properties such as light weight, high strength and corrosion resistance. However, in actual production and application, internal microscopic defects of the material often affect product quality. Recently, we received defective SMC material samples sent by a customer. Combined with the actual submitted SMC samples, we will sort out and explain in detail the professional metallographic sample preparation procedures and the entire microscopic observation process, providing you with a highly practical guide for microscopic analysis of composite materials.

Specimen Cutting: The SMC test piece with cracking defects is precisely cut by a metallographic cutting machine. During operation, the cutting speed and feed rate are strictly controlled to avoid secondary damage to the cracked area caused by mechanical stress. Meanwhile, the cutting surface is ensured to be flat and burr-free to meet the requirements of subsequent sample preparation.

Cold Mounting Preparation: Place the cut specimen accurately into the mounting mould of cold mounting press, then slowly pour in cold mounting resin. Ensure the resin fully encapsulates the cracked area and surrounding region of the specimen without bubbles or voids. Allow it to stand at room temperature until the resin is completely cured and formed, turning the specimen into a regular mounted block to facilitate subsequent grinding and polishing operations.

Specimen Grinding and Polishing: The cold-mounted and cured specimen is subjected to sequential grinding and fine polishing by metallographic grinding and polishing machine. In the grinding stage, abrasive papers of different mesh sizes are used in descending grit order. Uniform force is applied on the specimen surface during operation to gradually remove cutting marks. After grinding, matched polishing cloth and polishing agent are adopted for fine polishing until the observation surface of the specimen achieves a mirror finish without scratches, pitting or other defects.
Microscopic Observation: For cracking analysis of SMC materials, a high-quality metallurgical microscope can deliver clear and high-contrast images. Place the well-prepared specimen on the stage of the metallurgical microscope, and adjust the stage position to precisely align the cracked area of the specimen with the microscope lens. By adjusting the microscope magnification, observe the cracking location, crack propagation direction and surrounding microstructure step by step from low magnification to high magnification. Meanwhile, record images and data completely, so as to provide accurate microscopic morphology basis for the subsequent analysis of material cracking causes.
